Czech original version with English surtitles The composer’s ardent melodies, both tender and dramatically extreme, his masterful work with musical motifs and full-blooded orchestration, together with Jaroslav Kvapil’s fairy-tale libretto, make Rusalka a work of fascinating beauty addressing audiences of all ages. There is no doubt that the fantastic story and the characters of the nymphs, water goblin or the witch are of a fairy-tale nature, yet in its fairy-tale scenes, Dvořák’s paramount operatic work bears a profound message about the fundamental order of powers, elements, energies and passions in the natural, therefore also human, world.

The Prague National Theatre was built from the desire of the Czech people for national independence. Its building was financed from the collections on which participated broad masses of people as well as important donators (including the nobility and the emperor himself). The theatre foundation ceremonial on 16th May 1868 became a national celebration.
The theatre was opened in 1881. In the same year the theatre burned down, and this tragic event caused a huge wave of new collections to support the restoration of the theatre. The Prague National Theatre was re-opened in 1883 by the opera Libuše by Bedřich Smetana and since then it has been serving as a place of Czech national identity and as a flagship of the Czech culture to these days.

1 er opéra fait pas déçu
It was a gift for my daughter and son in law who were visiting Prague from Canada, and they said it was a most magical evening in every aspect.
Highlight of my trip to Prague.
Bravo au chef et à l'orchestre. Bonne distribution, avec une mention pour la basse. Mise en scène intéressante surtout pour les deux premiers actes.
Stunning performance.
