Together with La traviata and Il trovatore, Rigoletto (1851) is an opera that made Verdi famous worldwide. Verdi’s splendid melodies and the masterful depiction of the lead characters still enchant opera-lovers around the world.
Rigoletto´s beautiful daughter Gilda falls victim to her father’s promiscuous master, the Duke of Mantua. The genesis of the work, written for the Teatro La Fenice, was quite dramatic in itself. The Venice police intervened and subjected the original version to censorship, claiming that the theme was “tastelessly immoral” and “offensive to His Royal Majesty”.

Prague is full of opera and ballet performances.
Visit the recently re-opened and newly refurbished grand opera house with a noteworthy history where many world renown artists have worked here making each performance a prime cultural event.
This Neo-classical edifice was built in 1883 by the German Theatre Association as a reaction of German minority in Prague to the opening of the Prague National Theatre. As the New German Theatre it soon gained international acclaim for its inovative repertoire and artistic leadership including such names as Angelo Neumann, Alexander Zemlinski or Georg Szell.
Nowadays, famous operas, as well as pieces unjustly overlooked or unknown in the Czech Republic are introduced in the State Opera gaining the theatre a reputation of one of the best European scenes where you can enjoy watching mainly opera and ballet performances.

Le bâtiment est une merveille. Le spectacle a été formidable. Nous avons passé un très bon moment. Bravo.
Très belle réprésentation de Rigoletto. Même si la mise en scène situe l'action dans les années 1970, il de a de bonnes idées, et ce n'est pas choquant. Les chanteurs étaient formidables, on a beaucoup apprécié. Un très grand bravo.
I loved it! The music, the orchestra, the stage design & many other details were amazing. By reading more about Rigoletto itself before, the scenes were captured very well. Can recommend it!
