Hear one of the masterpieces of Shostakovich's vocal works
This vocal-instrumental suite for soprano/soprano, violin, cello and piano, entitled Seven Romances on the poems of Alexander Blok, first appeared in public in 1967. Shostakovich's music is often melancholic, but it is also imbued with great wisdom and hope for a better future for the world. Although the cycle is constructed as a single unit, each of the songs has a distinctive timbre and its own strong musical and literary statement. They also differ in terms of instrumentation. All four performers come together on stage for the first time during the last song, aptly titled Music.
