The new album of guitarist David Dorůžka, pianist Piotr Wyleżoł, bassist Michał Barański and drummer Michał Miśkiewicz „When the Child Was a Child“ was recorded in Warsaw, Poland in September 2024. The new record is partly a follow-up to album „Andromeda’s Mystery“ from 2022, which Dorůžka and Wylezol recorded with the American drum legend Jeff Ballard. But contrary to the electric, almost rock-sounding 2022 release, the musicians now return to an almost purely acoustic setting and to inspirations by the tradition of jazz music.
Besides that we can also notice echoes of Slavic folk music (as well as other folk music), and there is even a song by Sufjan Stevens, the famed American singer, composer and multiinstrumentalist. Another surprise is the debut guest appearance of harmonica player Nicholas Patu on two tracks. Dorůžka, Wyleżoł, Barański and Miśkiewicz have met for the first time in this particular line-up, although they are bound by years of friendship and rich experiences of sharing the stage together. Dorůžka has been a member of Piotr Wyleżoł’s band already fifteen years ago and they have performed together at the JazzBaltica Festival or at London’s South Bank Center.
Michał Barański appeared on Dorůžka’s album Silently Dawning already in 2007 and besides having performed together with this program, they also worked together for years as members of vocalist Aga Zaryan’s band. In that band Dorůžka also played for the first time with Michał Miśkiewicz, who appeared there as a guest drummer. Unlike Andromeda’s Mystery, which was recorded during the pandemic, the new album evokes an optimistic spirit and lyrical tunefulness. The title of the album refers to the legendary Wim Wenders movie The Wings of Desire, which was one of the inspirational sources during the making of the record.
