The Hungarian choreographer and former Artistic Director of Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Youri Vámos, was inspired by Charles Dickens’s fairy tale and introduced a new staging version of this ballet.

The Nutcracker belongs to one of the most popular of the classical repertoire of ballet ensembles. Since its premiere in 1892 it has undergone many changes in both the dramaturgical and choreographic conception, yet its popularity among children and adults alike has been constantly growing.

The National Theatre is the most important and representative theatre of the Czech Republic

The Prague National Theatre was built from the desire of the Czech people for national independence. Its building was financed from the collections on which participated broad masses of people as well as important donators (including the nobility and the emperor himself). The theatre foundation ceremonial on 16th May 1868 became a national celebration.

The theatre was opened in 1881. In the same year the theatre burned down, and this tragic event caused a huge wave of new collections to support the restoration of the theatre. The Prague National Theatre was re-opened in 1883 by the opera Libuše by Bedřich Smetana and since then it has been serving as a place of Czech national identity and as a flagship of the Czech culture to these days.

Such a holiday staple ! Nutcracker is my annual Christmas routine. Puts anyone in a festive spirit :)

Absolument magique. Ce ballet restera un de mes plus beaux souvenirs de Prague. Je m’attendais à une représentation classique de Casse-noisette, mais l’histoire est en fait un conte hybride avec le drôle de Noël de Scrooge (« A Christmas Carol »). La musique reste celle du ballet. C’est drôle, c’est beau, c’est facile d’accès : n’hésitez pas. J’y retournerai sans hésiter si je peux.

At the beginning of the ballet, I was not sure if it's a live performance or just a projection, because of the screen in front of the stage.

Fantastic, the ballet was stunning and the orchestra were superb. Was completely engrossed throughout.
