Charming Villa Amerika hosts permanent exhibition concerning the life and work of Antonín Dvořák

In Villa Amerika, you will be charmed not only by its late Baroque architecture, but also by nice chamber exhibition of music manuscripts and personal belongings of the famous composer Antonín Dvořák. If you admire Antonín Dvořák´s music, don´t miss chamber operatic concerts of Dvořák´s music held in the nice little concert hall of the museum!

Villa Amerika was built in 1720 as a summer palace for a Prague nobleman Jan Václav, Count Michna from Vacínov. A strong structure of the building and its fine decorations reflect the French style of the era, while its small scale, elegance and intimacy already announce future Rococo ideas.

The villa is named after the restaurant "Amerika" set up here in 1826. In mid-19th century The City of Prague bought the villa, which served gradually to different purposes, until finally after the WWII the Antonín Dvořák Museum was settled here. Nowadays, this permanent exhibition gives details of Dvořák´s personal life and work, as well as his concert and educational activities. The Museum also houses a unique collection of sheet music manuscripts and correspondence. In a small shop you can buy various souvenirs, printed sheet music and numerous recordings of Dvořák´s compositions.

There were many empty seats on the evening we saw the performance. (a shame - the performers deserved a larger audience). However, still too many rows of chairs were placed in the performance room, causing the front 2 rows to be too close to the performers. If not a sold out evening, I recommend getting rid of the front 2 rows of chairs to give the performers more space, and to ensure audience members do not feel uncomfortable because they are too close to the performers. Meanwhile, there is a large staircase up to the house and performance room, so accessibility is not good.

Villa Amerika is off the beaten tourist track, but easily accessible by public transportation. It was a lovely walk from the metro to the venue.

Wonderful location. Tougher to get to than old town sites but really just a few blocks from tram 22 stop.
