The famous opera portraying story of femme fatale Carmen
French original version with Czech and English surtitles
The story of Carmen, a passionate Gipsy whose love can never be won for good and whose flighty life ends at the hand of a spurned lover, the soldier Don José, has captivated audiences worldwide for decades.
Carmen is actually one of the first verismo operas that preceded the “manifesto” of the Italian artistic movement.
Its style, and the death of the title heroine, which were at variance with the established opéra comique conventions, seem to have been the reason why the work did not give rise to much public enthusiasm at and in the wake of the world premiere in Paris in 1875. Yet Carmen soon triumphed in other European cities.
The opera was first presented in Prague in 1880, at the Estates Theatre. The National Theatre staged in on 3 January 1884, shortly after its opening, as the very first foreign opera. In our new production, the story of Don José, a soldier who falls madly in love with the Gypsy Carmen, will be retold by the German director Grischa Asagaroff.
The score will be explored and the performance conducted by Jaroslav Kyzlink, the music director of the National Theatre Opera.

The National Theatre is the most important and representative theatre of the Czech Republic
The Prague National Theatre was built from the desire of the Czech people for national independence. Its building was financed from the collections on which participated broad masses of people as well as important donators (including the nobility and the emperor himself). The theatre foundation ceremonial on 16th May 1868 became a national celebration.
The theatre was opened in 1881. In the same year the theatre burned down, and this tragic event caused a huge wave of new collections to support the restoration of the theatre. The Prague National Theatre was re-opened in 1883 by the opera Libuše by Bedřich Smetana and since then it has been serving as a place of Czech national identity and as a flagship of the Czech culture to these days.

I just have one word for this play: AMAZING. The full company actors were unbeliavably excellent, the voices were astonishing, the musicians were perfect and the atmosphere was totally immersive, you could perfectly relate what the characters were feeling. The subtitles were also working perfectly: the actors were speaking in French but the subtitles were in Czech and English, it's definetly the opera I would most recommend to see in Prague. Furthermore, even the seat I took was "poor visibility" in the gallery, in the National Theatre, you can clearly see everything, there is just a little risk that you might have a column in front of you, blocking partially the view.

Premier opéra pour nous avec un excellent tarif mais placés très haut. Notre connaissance préalable nous a permis de suivre le texte en français ou à contrario en anglais. Aucune vérification de la tenue vestimentaire. Il y avait beaucoup de baskets !

We saw Carmen and it was fantastic. The opera was great but it was especially nice that they had the lyrics written on a screen in English so we could understand. Fantastic venue and show.

Although the location and singing were fabulous, the set looked as if it had been designed by a pre schooler and the costumes were bizarre, denim theme / costumes!

I am not a fan of opera - with the exception of 'Orpheus et Eurydice'- however I (together with my niece) had a fantastic evening. I was surprised to see so many secondary school pupils (in their best outfits) visiting the opera. All in all a fantastic evening !

Très belle représentation, beaux décors, beaux costumes. Les choeurs très biens ainsi que les chanteurs (sauf Don José un peu juste ua niveau puissance) Carmen était parfaite au niveau chant et jeu de scènes. Très agréble soirée.
