Beetlejuice: a mix of dark comedy, dark humour and poignant moments

in Czech with English subtitles

The world of the living versus the world of the dead. One of the most attractive topics since ancient times. In 1988, the acclaimed director Tim Burton treated it with the lightness and exaggeration inherent in his cult film Beetlejuice. The Oscar-winning film made an indelible mark on cinema history, if only because it paved the way for the horror fantasy comedy genre for decades to come.

The current musical adaptation of Beetlejuice, written by Scott Brown, Anthony King and composer and lyricist Eddie Perfecto, is in no way inferior to the original and, on the contrary, very tastefully and aptly takes the story to a more modern plane with elements of the latest theatrical tricks, magic and lighting effects.

The musical comedy, which had its world premiere in 2016 (Broadway, New York), follows a young girl, Lydia, who is constantly searching for a way to cope with the death of her beloved mother. Instead of her father Charles, who is blinded by his ethereal priestess Delia, her only listeners in her torment are the ghosts, Barbara and Adam. It is their house, against their wishes, that Lydia and her father and his mistress have moved into. The creature that brings even more chaos to the whole situation is the eccentric and amusing demon Beetlejuice, whose intentions are as impure as his teeth. As is the case with many dramas, love remains the prime mover here, showing itself in many forms and demonstrating its immortality to the viewer in addition to a riveting visual show.

The Karlin Music Theatre is one of the oldest and most beautiful theatres in Prague

The Neo-Baroque building, completed in 1881, was originally furnished with tables and initially served for circus and, later on, vaudeville performances and cabaret shows. In the 1920s, the building hosted performances given by various theatre companies and operetta performances.

Throughout its history, the Karlín Theatre employed some of the most distinguished Czech artists. During the time of the Nazi occupation, the building was the venue for performances of then closed National Theatre, under the name Provisional Theatre.

After the World War II, in 1945, the director E. F. Burian launched in Karlín the regular operation of the repertoire musical theatre. In 1950, the theatre came under the administration of the City of Prague, and in 1954 became the property of the state and was given a new name: the State Theatre in Karlín. In 1961, it was returned to the City of Prague as the Karlin Music Theatre, and has remained so until the present day.

The show was just amazing. I was scared because I have never seen a musical in czech and was scared I wasn't going to enjoy it, but it was just so amazing.
