Laterna magika brings Poe’s fantastic universe to life blending modern technologies with top-class dance theatre
Edgar Allan Poe was a true gem. A rough diamond with hundreds of facets. The creators of the brand-new production aim to pay tribute to the variegated world of Poe’s literary treasures, the widely known macabre, mysterious, spine-chilling and disquieting subjects he treated. Moreover, they will present the celebrated author as a keen lover of natural beauty, as well as a writer of philosophical essays and poetry, and strikingly extraordinary humorous tales.
Paying tribute at Laterna magika affords the splendid opportunity to blend state-of-the-art technologies with top-class dance theatre, thus bringing Poe’s fantastic universe to life.
“He who has never swooned, is not he who finds strange palaces and wildly familiar faces in coals that glow; is not he who beholds floating in mid-air the sad visions that the many may not view; is not he who ponders over the perfume of some novel flower—is not he whose brain grows bewildered with the meaning of some musical cadence which has never before arrested his attention.”
(Edgar Allan Poe: The Pit and the Pendulum)

Laterna magika - The New Stage of National Theatre, a world famous nonverbal multimedia theatre in Prague
Legendary project of Laterna magika is a Czech-unique, a show combining elements of film and live acting performances.
Classical principles of non-verbal theatre mingle with dance, film images and black light theatre. The audience is drawn into the story by a panoramically projected image, and fantastic scenes surpass the boundaries between fantasy and reality.
Enjoy the journey to the fantastic world of the Laterna magika, a synthesis of pantomime, dance, music, film and black light theatre.
The building of the New Stage of National Theatre, built in 1983, was tailored to the specific requirements of Laterna magika performances. The unconventional edifice, covered by over four thousand pieces of glass tiles, was designed by Karel Prager.
The diversely shaped glass tiles, created by Stanislav Libenský, form a distinctive relief which gives the New Stage its characteristic appearance. This unique use of glass makes the whole building an original sculptural work of art.

A dreamlike, fantastical show with outstanding actors, breathtaking stagecraft, and incredibly expressive performances. I felt the terror, the despair—deep in my gut. It was raw, emotional, and alive (no pun intended). I didn’t want it to end.

This kind of event is not my cup of tea. But I must render hommage to the quality of dancers, costume design (outstanding), and also - in a lesser extent - to the choreography

Really incredible production quality. I was mesmerized the entire time. Wow!

As it was "black light" theatre we had not expected there to be very much, if any, speech but there was quite a lot. There were English language translations on a screen but as that was on the upper far left of the stage and we were on the right of the theatre it was impossible to read most of the time. Apart from that the show was entertaining and the dance sequences were excellent. The combination of costumes, dance, lighting and theatrical magic made it a great night.
