Estates Theatre Guided Tour
Tour in English Language
Take a guided tour of the one of Europe's most beautiful theatre buildings, the Estates Theatre linked with W. A. Mozart.
The Estates Theatre is deeply linked with the name of W. A. Mozart. Besides other of his works, it was the venue of world premieres of two Mozart operas: Don Giovanni (on 29 October 1787 – conducted by the composer himself) and La clemenza di Tito (1791, to mark the coronation of Leopold II). Enjoy the festive atmosphere of this beautiful theatre in which W. A. Mozart received enthusiastic ovations after conducting his operas. The Estates Theatre is in operation continuously since 1783. It was built by enlightened and patriotically minded Count Nostitz Rieneck, who thus aimed to enhance the cultural life of Prague inhabitans.
His idea, that a generally accessible theatre is a moral institution demonstrating the cultural level of the nation, was in compliance with the spirit of the late 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment, and the project of theatre was extremely important for Prague of that time. Although presenting plays in German language at first, the theatre soon started staging also Czech plays. In 1798 the Theatre was bought by the Czech Estates, hence its today´s name.
The Estates Theatre is inseparably linked with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The composer has visited Prague couple of times to compose and give concerts here, and in 1787 he presented his opera The Marriage of Figaro in the Estates Theatre.
Under the impression of its enthusiastic reception Mozart composed the Don Giovanni opera for Prague, and personally conducted its world premiere in the Estates Theatre. The opera was an immense success and that is how Don Giovanni and the Estates Theatre have entered the history...
The Estates Theatre was one of the locations in the famous film Amadeus by Miloš Forman. Although the name of Mozart shines the most brightly in the history of the theatre, the Estates Theatre allured many other distinct artists of Europe-wide significance.
Carl Maria von Weber was a musical director of the Theatre; the violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini gave a concert here; Arthur Rubinstein, Carl Goldmark and Gustav Mahler conducted at the theatre. Other famous personalities are i.e. the actors W. A. Iffland, F. Raimund, J. N. Nestroy, W. Scholze, I. Aldrige and many others.
The Estates Theatre was extremely important for the Czech theatre. From the pioneers such as the Thám brothers, to V. K. Klicpera, J. K. Tyl, J. J. Kollár, etc., the generations of leading creators and artists presented their plays here. The first Czech modern opera, Škroup’s The Tinker, was presented here in 1826.
The play Fidlovačka by J. K. Tyl and F. Škroup, premiered here, includes the song “Kde domov můj” (Where is My Home), which would later become the Czech national anthem. In the Estates Theatre you can see opera, drama and ballet performances.
Beautiful venue, only regret were that the seats were low and became uncomfortable when sitting for a long time.
What a wonderful theatre. Despite the show it was a joy to be in that space.
excellent condition for such an historic and old building
Lovely heritage theatre.
Note 1
The theater (venue) was amazing. The preserved historical connection was impressive and certainly a key to the unique quality of the theater. A few minor observances to share were to recommend increasing air flow in the theater to mitigate heating up the theater and distracting focus on the performance. The venue was great and we enjoyed the opportunity to see a great performance in this theater.
Too hot on the 1st balcony during performance.
The seat next but one to my seat had damaged (split open) upholstery. Such a shame as it was otherwise a beautiful and historic theatre.
The box in which we saw the opera had 5 people, and it was VERY warm.
A gem. I had always wanted to see an opera in this theatre. I saw Mozart's Don Giovanni. Outstanding.
Hermoso teatro.
Très beau cadre pour le spectacle.
Fantastic venue.
The venue is breathtaking.
A beautiful interior.
The venue is stunning. Everything is keeping with the old style. The seats are more spacious than the UK and it is not packed in, very comfortable and extremely easy to put coats in the cloakroom on your floor.
Wonderful atmospheric theatre. Comfortable seats with excellent view of stage and orchestra
Excellent performance at a beautiful theater. All of my opera experiences at Prague have been positive due to reasonable ticket prices, stunning venues, and talented casts. Highly recommend!
Everything correct, as always.
The Estates Theatre venue was amazing. Such great atmosphere and acoustics. The staff were polite and helpful.
The venue is spectacular, such a historical place - Mozart conducted one of his opera at The Estate Theater back in 1787. Such an honor to be in a place like that.
WoW! One of the most beautiful European theatres I’ve ever seen! I was in box 11 - which was great too! I was surprised it didn’t sell out…
Elegant and inviting. Cloak rooms and champagne bar on most floors for convenience. Excellent seats even on the top balcony!
I sat in the box 13, seat 1, and it was extremely comfortable for me in terms of comfort, and enjoying the stage and music.
Situé au centre de Prague .
Couldn't have been better since Don Giovanni was first performed at this venues over 200 years ago
I mentioned the venue was perfect in my brief review. I felt it was an intimate theater, beautifully preserved and maintained.
The beautifully maintained venue that Mozart himself performed in - it cannot get any better than this.
One of the most beautiful and historically significant venues I have visited. The box was a little hot and crowded with 4 people but overall a wonderful experience.
Hostile usher refused to let us enter without checking our coats, which involved my going against crowd flow downstairs. I use a cane for a recovering knee replacement, which made this difficult.
Lovely theatre with great sight lines, a pleasure to visit.
The Estate Theater is a must visit when you are in Prague.
It is one of the historical places You should go and see in Prague.
Wonderful historical theatre Preferably avoid the upper galleries as they are very high up.
A wonderful theatre - I think almost the most perfect I have been to. It is a must if you are in Prague.
Temperature was warm and chairs could be more comfortable
Lieu mythique !
The accoustics were lame (cheap seats at the second galery). Almost nothing visible from the seats, but not marked as visually impaired. The tehatre itself is marvellous. Next time I'd rather invest in better seats.
Absolutely beautiful.
The Estates Theatre is surely the most beautiful theatre in the world. It was a great privilege to hear Mozart’s wonderful opera in such an exquisite theatre. Thank you to all the people who must have worked with such love and skill to enable this performance.
Dazzlingly elegant and great sight lines and acoustics.
A magnificent theatre Probably my favourite opera venue so far Whole experience enhanced by heritage of Mozart. Staff friendly and helpful 2PTXx
Again, due to the poor seating and heat.
Très beau lieu Strapontins un peu petit
Very pleasant staff.
So special to be in a first class historical venue
Wonderful building. Comfortable box seats. Venue temperature stayed comfortable the whole evening
I love the theatre, very nicely decorated. I understand that Mozart's Don Giovanni was premiered here, so there is a special connection to Mozart. Staff were very courteous and acoustics worked well
Way too hot on the first galerie. Would help to install some sort of cooling system. We left after two acts.
Quality of the singing was excellent! The production -set etc, could have been more elaborate and made something of the different scenes of the event
Amazing!
Can't go wrong with a venue from the 18th century! The beautiful architecture left us breathless all by itself! Oh, and don't forget to check out the statue of Il Commendatore in front of the theatre.
Unique historical venue
The old theatre is remarkable, comfortable and very beatiful
Excellet
Easy access, easy venue for drinks and friendly staff. The only problem is the number of toilets, (too few)
Petit théâtre ou respire une ambiance feutrée
Beautiful theater worth seeing regardless of the performance.
So pretty, great acoustics
See above
Sublime
Great
The acoustics were excellent and it was easy to follow even from the farthest seats.
Most beautiful location ever! Kind staff
Please see the above.7
One of the most beautiful theaters I have ever been in with excellent acoustics, a gem of a venue.
Beautiful
We booked two boxes which were closest to stage. Apparently, it was too close to stage and some things could not be seen from there. It would have been better to choose different seats, even for a higher price.
A very well preserved theatre, with updated technology for sound and lighting. The evening there was very enjoyable.
The venue was absolutely beautiful and well suited to the opera given the historical significance of the building and the Opera itself. Venue also had very good seating and it was spacious but intimate. However, as noted above, the ticketing process was very poor. I never received my ticket via email and there were several other people who also did not receive their tickets. We were able to enter the venue but this ticketing problem caused much distress. Please review your ticketing process to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. The woman at the ticket counter could not find my reservation even with the email I was sent confirming that I had purchased a ticket.
Absolutely gorgeous theater. I've been to theaters in London, New York, Philadelphia, etc and this one is just stunning! Love the balcony boxes in particular!
Beautiful interior and comfortable seating. Balcony seating is definitely the way to go as you can see the orchestra and have a good view of the stage. Would be nice if there was a sign saying which door to use as there was some confusion about how to enter the the building.
Amazing!
Beautiful and glamourous. We really liked our balcony box for the two of us. The possibility of making reservations for the break we thought was clever.
Fantastic historical building, everything as it should be for such a performance.
Magnifique théâtre a l'italienne.
Beautiful theatre and quite overwhelming to think Mozart himself conducted the first performance of Don Giovanni! A wonderful theatrical experience.
The Estates Theatre is breathtaking. We sat in a box seat. I would happily return a 100 times again!
Great architecture. The one minus was overzealous security hounding us about wearing medical mask.
A beautiful little 18th century theatre where Mozart himself conducted. The acoustics are excellent and the seats comfortable.
First, we were late, a first in our concert-going ventures, but the staff fully accommodated us, even though we hadn’t picked up the tickets and the ticket office was closed. The coat check girl even jumped over the Garderobe to show us to our seats. Even more important, since this most likely won’t happen to you, was the acoustics. I chose to stand rather than disturb those already seated, and my spot was magic. I have been the both the State Opera and Volksoper in Vienna, the Met in NY, the National Theater in Prague and the Cologne in Buenos Ares, among others, yet the Estates had the best acoustics from my position. Amazing!
Beautiful venue and very good value. We were in box number three which is a slightly restricted view, but I think many of the boxes are a bit restricted. Also worth mentioning the wine was really cheap!
Baroque theatre, covered with gilt cherubs and with a stunning chandelier. Small and intimate.
Beautiful
The Estate Theatre is a wonderful place. The architecture and decor is typical of classical opera and theatre houses.
Hard to believe that this venue is 330 years old. It is simply breathtaking, and like all things in Prague, beautifully restored and maintained. One of my favorite spots in Prague. Historic and so worthwhile. Excellent and highly recommended.
The theater is so beautiful, it feels as if you are transported centuries back. Friendly staff.
A wonderful venue that added to the atmosphere of the performance.
Magnifique endroit, très bien tenu. Personnel aimable et serviable. Parfait !
This is, due to its beauty and historical importance, one of the most remarkable theatres in the world
This is a neoclassical-style theater which is very elegant and quiet, not over decorative. The pale green color of the interior walls makes you calm. The rather small size of the hall has an advantage of good acoustics and you feel closer to the stage.
Absolutely stunning
Petit théâtre charmant chargé d'histoire. On sent presque la présence de Mozart. Loge parfaite.
The opera house exceeded my expectations in grandeur and splendour as well as there being ample legroom which I didn’t expect. A beautiful setting, I waited until the lights went down to let a tear escape at the beauty.
Very nice theater!!!
Great theatre
Magnifique
The Estates Theater is awesome in every way!
Lovely thatre, good places, easy to read the English sentences.
Superb venue, even the cheap seats were excellent!
Very long qeue for Drink .
very cosy!
The history associated with the Stavovske Divadlo speaks for itself. It's a lovely jewel of a house - we've seen 4 productions here over the years, and there is not a bad seat in the house. On the other hand, to sit on these seats for an opera with a running time of over 3 hours is torture.
So intimate!
I was happy to be at place where Mozart were create music
Take a guided tour of the one of Europe's most beautiful theatre buildings, the Estates Theatre linked with W. A. Mozart.
An intense reciprocal experience of the recited pieces and an extraordinary experience enhanced by the venue itself.
One of the most popular operas worldwide, Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) has been a staple of the Mozart repertoire at the Estates Theatre.
